Students watched the film, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". Everyone seems to really enjoy it...the book is a very quick, great read if anyone is interested.

An assignment is due on the film. Make sure your answers are in full complete sentences and in paragraph form.

We began to talk about the Holocaust on Friday. The slides from that lesson are below.

Today's class was spent at the Remembrance Day assembly and the Cenotaph.

Tomorrow we will begin our mini-unit on the Holocaust.

With all of the information in the news about the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down, we skipped ahead in history and looked at this event.

The Unit 2 test for the 1920s & 1930s was written this period.

Remember to read pages 212-213 and pages 216-221 for tomorrow's class. You will have about 15 minutes of class time tomorrow to complete the questions and definitions assigned today. You can get a jump start on them tonight.

Another 1920s presentation today, on the Everyday Life in the 1920s.

The 1930s textbook assignment was to be completed by the end of this class. Make sure it is in tomorrow if you did not get it finished in class today.

1920s Group Presentations continued today with "Sports and Entertainment", "Economy" and "Prohibition". We will wrap up the presentations tomorrow.

The reminder of class was spend finishing and taking up the 1930s Scrapbook Assignment, as well as finishing off our 1920s Slang Game.

1920s Group Presentations begun today, the rest will be completed tomorrow.

We looked at the concept of the business cycle, along with the Stock Market Crash and other causes of The Great Depression.

A scrapbook assignment looking at The Depression was completed in class.

Today was the final work period for the 1920s Group Project. Most of the class struggled with working quietly and keeping on task. All three components of the group project are DUE MONDAY. There are NO exceptions to this. Groups must be ready to go ahead with their Oral Presentations, as well as hand in the Handout and Poster. If it is not done Monday, a zero will be assigned.

Wednesday October 28th & Thursday October 29th

Yesterday the class finished watched the Charlie Chaplin film, "Modern Times". The movie looked at life in the 20s and 30s as well as the effect of industrialization on society.

Today, students completed an assignment on the film. We discussed the definitions of assembly line, "Little Tramp", unions, communist, and Gamin. Students then completed the rest of the work on Modern Times.

We started to look at life in the 1930s and the effects of the depression on family life. Students were given a handout showing the breakdown of a family's salary and subsequent costs in today's money value. They then were given the scenario of losing at least 40% of their wage to the Depression, and then having no income. The assignment had the students focusing on what they would have to cut out of their lives and give up or sell to survive the Depression. A "survival plan" was created. The goal was to have you connect and understand the extreme hardships that were being felt by the people in the 1930s.

We took an unique look at Prohibition today, we saw the world of bootlegging and speakeasies through the eyes of Springfield's citizens.

The rest of the period was given to groups to work on their 1920s projects in the computer lab. A markbreakdown was given for the three components of the assignment.
They are as follows:

Monday October 26th

The one part students struggled with on the WW1 test was identifying countries on a map of Europe. Another handout was given of both pre- and post- WW1 Europe for students to have another look at before we begin our WWII unit in a couple of weeks.

We re-looked at problems in Post-WW1 Canada...including prohibition, influenza, veteran and social support, etc. Together, as a class, we filled out a summary of the different parts look at in a previous textbook reading from last week.

Students got a glimpse at the 1930s through the film "Modern Times" feature Charlie Chaplin. A quick overview was given on industrialization, the labour movement, and Charlie Chaplin. His final full length silent film, focuses on the 1930s and the effects of industrialization. We will finish off the film tomorrow.

We had a work period for the 1920s Group Projects. Resources were given to each group to help with their topics.

We also finished watching the 3rd candidate "Don Cherry" for The Greatest Canadian.

The Roaring 20s continued today. A note was taken about the 6 major changes in Canada in the 1920s.

Here are six major changes for Canadians in the 1920's:

1. Most Canadian homes and business get electric power.

2. Cars and trucks become very common. At least half of all Canadian families own one.

3. Millions of Canadians get factory jobs. Large factories replace small local businesses. Instead of growing or making things on their own, people now work in factories and get a weekly pay cheque and then buy what they need in stores. Everyone wants to buy new electrical appliances, radios, and cars.

4. Canadians start to turn away from British culture and attitudes and get more influence from the U.S. with consumer products, magazines, radio programs, movies, recorded music.

5. Women fight to receive more freedom and rights, including the right to vote, the right to own property, the same legal authority over children that their husbands have, the freedom to get a job or get a high school, college, or university education, the freedom to dress as they wish, to go out on their own, to dance, smoke, drive, etc.

6. Canadians start to see Canada as a distinct country, not just an extra part of Britain. We begin to express our own ideas in world affairs and to make agreements with other countries without British approval. We begin to develop our own ideas in art, music, writing, society, instead of copying what is done in Britain.

In groups of 3, a topic was chosen from the 1920s. The project will consist of a oral presentation, written handout, and poster. Each group will become the expert on a 1920s topic and teach the class all about it. A work period will take place again tomorrow, as well as Tuesday. Presentations will take place Wednesday October 28th.

Wednesday October 21st

We continued today with the post-war Canada, focusing on the Winnipeg General Strike, Prohibition, and the Economy.

There was a note copied about the Winnipeg General Strike:

Winnipeg General Strike

-one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history
-platform for future labour reforms
-causes: -cost of living rising due to post-war inflation
-contracts, wages, and working conditions were dismal and labour regulations non-existent
-March 1919, labour delegates across Canada went to Calgary to propose and negotiate the idea of One Big Union (plan to organize all working men and women)

-Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council (WTLC) reached standoff right after this
-general strike called May 1919, more than 30 000 unionized and non-unionized workers walked off
-six weeks long, won support across Canada

-Prime Minister Borden feared conflict would grip the nation
-fear that "Eastern European socialists" were spreading and assisting
-laws of Immigrant Act were changed...merely suspicion could allow police to arrest without bail, easier to deport British-born citizens as well with the changes
-government had forces go and arrest many without bail, patrolled streets
-June 21st, "Bloody Saturday" because of the pandemonium that occurred...2 died, 20+ injured

-WTLC called off strike on June 26th
-terrible defeat for organized labour
-30 years for Federal government to recognized union and collective bargaining

2 articles about Prohibition were read and students came up with a Pros & Cons chart about this idea. After, we looked briefly at the economy of Canada and its uprise leading into the 1920s.

We continued with our "1920's Slang Game"...two more days until a winner is declared!

Monday October 19th & Tuesday October 20th

Monday was spent writing the World War I Unit Test. Students did fairly well overall on the test. I was impressed with many of the paragraph answers in the final section of the test.

Tuesday, we began the ROARING 20's! We looked at post-war problems Canada had immediately following the end of WW1. We quickly caught a glimpse of the fashion changes and new slang of the 1920s.

Homework:
-read pages 134-141
-under the headings, "Prohibition", "Influenza Epidemic", and "Labour Unrest" write (in point form) the five main ideas of each
-complete definitions for "One Big Union" and "The Winnipeg General Strike"

*Mark updates will be given out in class tomorrow. They must be taken home and signed by your parents!!!*

Today's period was all spent focused on World War I test review. The unit test is on MONDAY!

We went over the test outline and general notes on what to study. (see note below) Everyone did really well on the review game. Remember to study your notes over the weekend!

-label the countries in 1914 as well as London & Paris...and the Schlieffen Plan (exactly like the map we did at the beginning of the unit!)

-will be given approx. 20 elements of a trench and you will have to include about 10 on the diagram

-choose 2-3 of 6 questions to answer

We finished up WW1 talking about the Halifax Explosion...which brought the consequences of war to Canada. Students were then given a WW1 crossword and questions to start their test reviewing with.

We watched the second episode in "The Greatest Canadian". This time, we saw George Stroumboulopoulos fight for why Tommy Douglas should be chosen for this title.

We will have our test review Friday in preparation for Monday's Unit Test!!!

Wednesday October 14th

We wrapped up World War I today. We went over a lot of information today in class through lecture and discussion. It included the following:
-political leaders of WW1
-cost of war
-Wilson's Fourteen Point proposal
-Treaty of Versailles (its points and repercussions for the future)

A short part of the textbook was read on the effect of the war on Canada and three questions were to be answered by tomorrow.

Hope everyone had a relaxing long weekend!

We are finishing up World War I this week. Today we looked at the Canadian success of Vimy Ridge and the Last Hundred Days. Groups of 2-3 looked at the strategies and preparation that Canada made for Vimy Ridge and the huge success that came from it.

We finished up looking at Canada back home during the war today. Today focused on a the economy, government, and women's role as well as a review of conscription during WWI.

Students completed a reading and questions on the topics discussed and had class time to complete their propaganda poster and letter to the editor about conscription.

We continued to look at what was going on back home in Canada during World War I.

After viewing Flyboys yesterday, students wrote a 2 paragraph opinion on whether or not they would have wanted to be a pilot in WWI.

We discussed Propaganda in the war, looking at various techniques and examples of successful posters. Classtime was given for students to create their own piece of propaganda for WW1. Posters are due tomorrow in class.

This course will be focused on Canada from World War I through to the present day. Students will examine events throughout these years and how they affected Canada.

This website will be used as a resource for both students and parents to keep up to date with what is going on in our History class.
